Bitcoin is finally going to the Moon in 2023 summer. Astrobotic Technology, BitMEX, and Bitcoin Magazine have partnered to send the first physical Bitcoin to the Moon from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida this summer.
Over two years of preparation have gone into the mission to ensure the readiness of the physical Bitcoin for space flight, which has been integrated into the Moon lander Peregine-1. It was first announced in 2021
The special Bitcoin is loaded with 1 BTC, along with a public address and a private key engraved. People can interact with it from the Earth or in space by sending items such as Bitcoin Ordinals to the Moon. Along with physical Bitcoin, the Genesis Block as a tribute to Satoshi’s protocol will be displayed on a metal plate.
It is a defining moment for the crypto industry and a milestone for space exploration. This will be the first Western soft lunar landing since NASA’s Apollo 17 mission in 1972.
Stephan Lutz, CEO & Group CFO at BitMEX, said Bitcoin will live forever in space, as a monument of a world without borders where everyone can use it.
“This is not just an achievement for BitMEX, but a breakthrough in human history being the first-ever financial asset sent to space. We are excited to work with like-minded partners who share our goal to inspire all mankind to strive for a fair and equitable system of values, as analogous to that of the birth of Bitcoin: an item of value that is independent of its creators or owners, 14 years ago.
The historic moment celebration includes an auction for Bitcoin on the Moon rock, limited-edition commemorative coins and Ordinals, and other collectibles.
